FINANCE

Fundraising and Fiscal Management

I have a proven track record in both fundraising and fiscal management both inside and outside of Scouting.  My experiences in Scouting helped prepare me for my tenure as Executive Director of Hope House, a day shelter and soup kitchen.  There, I was responsible for all phases of the financial operation from fundraising and budgeting to compliance and HR responsibilities.  Career highlights include:

Fundraising:

  • Proven track record of increasing the Family FOS Campaign in each professional position including helping reenergize a campaign  that went from $60,000 to $126,000 from 2019 to 2022.

  • Provides leadership to the annual popcorn sale grossing over  $345,000 in sales for 2019.

  • In my current role, I am responsible for the development and oversight of the camping budget through a volunteer process. I have increased the revenues and decreased the burden camping places on the council budget for each of the Leatherstocking Council camping programs each of the last 4 years (pre-Covid).

  • In my role as Executive Director of the Hope House in Utica New York, I had the opportunity of working with a group of dedicated board members to turn a $60,000  operating debt in 2010 into an operating surplus by fiscal year 2012.  At time of departure, I had secured a multi year gift of $50,000 per year.

  • While at Hope House,  I helped to develop a new relationship with the local United Way resulting in over $100,000 in new funding generated during the four years of my tenure.  In previous years, I have worked closely with the United Way to help support the Council’s Scoutreach initiative.

  • Through development and donor cultivation, I secured over $100,000 in grants that benefitted the Councils' camping program including:  new range building, climbing tower, and UTV for camps emergency use.

  • Have worked with volunteer committees to successfully run golf events, sporting clays tournaments, and council dinners.

  • Successfully transformed the Eagle Dinner from a break even at best event in 2016 to a revenue producer for the Leatherstocking Council..

Fiscal Management and Governance:

  • Able to work with board members, staff and volunteers to create a better understanding of the Council’s accounting system including financial reporting.

  • Implemented a BSA planned budgeting process resulting in greater volunteer and staff involvement and accountability in the councils fiscal operations.

  • Experience providing leadership and support working directly with the audit and CPA firm to ensure the audit was conducted on time and met all standards and policies for both the BSA.

  • Strong belief in sharing and explaining the Council’s financial statements to all levels of volunteers and staff under the philosophy of creating transparency, buy-in and support.

  • In Laurel Highlands, I participate in the finance committee, audit committee, and endowment  meetings.

  • While serving as interim Scout Executive, I successfully managed the transition from an in house bookkeeper to working with JITASA.

  • For 6 years I served as Treasurer of the Good News Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to serving the community through innovative faith-based programs. I successfully developed their first gift acceptance policy to help the organization avoid accepting unwanted gifts.  I helped oversee over 20 million dollars in organizational assets.
